Praat is pretty awesome. Though, yes, it is academic software designed for phonologists to use so probably not the easiest thing for lay folks to pick up. While the website is ancient, the code itself has been maintained up through a few days ago, and I can attest that it is still the go-to tool for phonological analysis in academia.
